Ripleys Aquarium of the Smokies Makes the Top 10 List!

Friday, June 8th, 2018

It’s no secret that aquariums are one the coolest types of museums to visit, especially here in the Smokies! Walking underneath the sharks and petting the stingrays will never get old, even if I’m not 10 years old anymore.

USA Today recently created a poll for the Best10 Aquariums in North America, and we are excited to announce that Ripley’s Aquarium of Smokies landed in 2nd! With ever-changing exhibits and visitor- aquatic life interaction, Ripley’s always has a piece of our hearts and keeps us coming back every year for new exhibits to see. Personally, I took the afternoon off, put on my *imaginary* flippers and hit up the aquarium to relive my one my favorite childhood hotspots. I can’t wait to share with y’all my favorite exhibits and even SHOW you my journey through Ripley’s!

I started out waking into the upper level which provides a grand open lookout over a massive play structure, interactive tunnels, horseshoe crabs, and the Moon Jellies. Be sure to check out the video below for my experience! My favorite exhibit, hands- down, is Shark Lagoon! Of course there’s many species that live in the tank, but the excitement of standing underneath a shark… there’s nothing like it (check out the video for my fun but slightly nervous reaction!). Visitors get to stand on a moving sidewalk that travels over 100 yards through the tank. While in the tunnel I also got to see Sally the sea turtle getting some affection from the divers! She was so cute!

After returning to, what felt like land, I ventured off to find the horseshoe crabs and the Moon Jellies. Fun fact: Horseshoe crabs are not true crabs, they are related to spiders and scorpions! I thought it was so cool to feel the hard shell of the horseshoe crabs and walk just few steps and touch the squishy jellies! I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous at first but the educators are so knowledgable and make safety a priority!

Next, I moved into the newest exhibit called Shipwrecked. This is very educational in regards to historical shipwrecks and Civil War era artifacts. I even got to meet Abraham Lincoln! 😉 Okay so maybe I didn’t actually meet him, but I loved getting to see artifacts and learn fun facts about him and the Civil War time period. A few other displays teach you interesting facts about Black Beard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge, the Edmund Fitzgerald, CSS Alabama, and the Hunley!

Be sure to check out the Shipwrecks exhibits while it’s on display!

After exploring the Shipwrecks exhibit, I made time to catch the Penguin Feeding! In Penguin Playhouse you get to see the penguins interacting, playing, swimming, and feeding. Check out my video to watch the cutest penguins during their feeding time. During this show, educators actually talk to you and give you fun facts regarding penguins in general as well as their own penguins here at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies.

While sadly reaching the end of my day, I couldn’t leave without petting the stingrays! I made my way to Touch-A-Ray Bay to interact with these fun friends. They have such a slippery texture but they sure do love the attention. This is one of the largest interactive exhibits at Ripley’s but definitely a favorite of mine!

Time to recap: On your adventure through Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies be sure to check out my favorite exhibits:
  1. Shark Lagoon
  2. Shipwrecks Exhibit
  3. Penguin Playhouse
  4. Interactive Horseshoe Crabs and Moon Jellies
  5. Touch-A-Ray Bay
  6. Glass Bottom Boat Adventure

Spend Your Day at The Island in Pigeon Forge!

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

The Island in Pigeon Forge20150604_132120

As a native East Tennesseean, one of the first things I had to do once I arrived in Pigeon Forge was visit The Island in Pigeon Forge.

The Island in Pigeon Forge isn’t what you would call a “hidden gem,” but many people just see The Wheel and maybe the fountains. Trust me, there is much more to The Island than a big wheel and some water. I spent the entire day just wandering around people watching, shopping and, most exciting, eating!  Granted, I’m usually always eating but I was able to explore the unique and delicious restaurants that are offered here!

Where To Stay

If you plan on spending your day here, why not STAY at The Island?

The Margaritaville Island Hotel is inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer, songwriter and author Jimmy Buffett. Margaritaville Island Hotel is the perfect setting to escape the everyday, discover a new outlook and just chill! Each of the 134 guest rooms offers island inspired décor, stacked stone fireplace and private balcony overlooking the river, village shops or Island Show Fountains. A wet bar is also available in every room complete with refrigerator, microwave and you guessed it- Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker! If the classic beach theme isn’t enough, how about a swimming pool…ON THE ROOF!!! The Margaritaville Hotel also has a coffee shop and bar. (Not together…that would be weird.) To make reservations of for more info on the Margaritaville Island Hotel, click here.

The Margaritaville Island Inn offers paradise in the smokies all year round! After a day in the mountains, bring you and your family back to the Inn for a fin flippin’ island escape. The Margaritaville Island Inn’s contemporary coastal hotel rooms, two pools and indoor gathering space invite you to kick back and unwind after an action-packed day in the mountains. Practical amenities that make your stay comfortable and special touches that make it fun have been thoughtfully included for your enjoyment. Check Inn and chill out! To make reservations of for more info on the Margaritaville Island Inn, click here

Where To Eat

There are so many great places to eat at The Island, you really can’t go wrong but here are some of our favorites!

Margaritaville Restaurant: Take a bite out of paradise at Margaritaville’s own restaurant! Nestled at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Margaritaville is located on the south end of The Island in Pigeon Forge, a must-see retail and entertainment attraction featuring the 200-foot high Great Smoky Mountain Wheel as a centerpiece. The Margaritaville restaurant’s natural materials, exposed wood and warm tropical colors create a welcoming, laid back atmosphere with unique dining spaces, a concert stage, and multiple bars. A large exterior deck overlooks the Little Pigeon River where guests can enjoy outdoor dining and live music at the 5 O’Clock Somewhere bar complete with an oversized fire pit. In addition to the restaurant, the Margaritaville retail store gives guests the opportunity to extend their visit by taking the music, fashion, and flavors of Margaritaville home with them.

Timberwood Grill:  Timberwood grill brings you the genuine taste of the mountains. Inspired by the legendary hospitality of the people who have called the mountains their home for generations, this lodge-themed dining experience is one we are sure you will enjoy.

Delight in our hearty food and delicious drink creations that are truly as unique as the legendary mountain men and women of yore.

Dick’s Last Resort: If you’re looking for something a little different in your dining experience, Dick’s Last Resort is where you need to take the family. Yes…the family. You may have heard about Dick’s but this IS a kid friendly atmosphere.
